After Oscar’s

After nearly a century of cold cuts, bacon and hot dogs, the original Oscar Mayer plant was forced to end production in 2017.  At its peak, the plant employed more than 4,000 workers in Madison — many of whom went on to spend decades of their lives there and consider it a second home.  Although it’s difficult to say goodbye, the family atmosphere that was characteristic of the north side plant will remain after Oscars closes.

This project was created thanks to a community-based course development grant through the Morgridge Center for Public Service.  It is a special project for Madison Commons, a hyper-local news site affiliated with the University of Wisconsin – Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
